Challenge
In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy on Far Rockaway, Queens, NY, local and government agencies initiated an international design competition to identify the best solution for the area's redevelopment. This competition aimed to attract innovative proposals that could address the pressing need for a resilient, adaptable urban design capable of withstanding future natural disasters. Competing against highly established large architectural and engineering firms from around the world, our small three-person team set out to create a comprehensive master plan that emphasized resiliency and adaptability, integrating seamlessly with the existing community and environment, and showcasing a forward-thinking approach to urban resilience.
Solutions
Our proposal offered a unique approach to coastal community development by loosening the rigidity of traditional artificial systems. We envisioned a dynamic urban environment that could adapt to natural processes, including future coastal erosion and accumulation. By flexibly rearranging the urban fabric and natural edges, our design ensured that the development would evolve in harmony with nature. This preemptive strategy was aimed at creating a resilient urban system capable of withstanding the ravages of nature.
Achievements
Our innovative approach and meticulous planning paid off. Our project was selected as one of the top ten finalists in the international design competition, standing out among entries from prestigious firms worldwide. This recognition was further amplified when our project was published in the New York City Housing Development public announcement and exhibited at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter. These accolades underscore our commitment to pioneering urban design and resilience, and our ability to deliver impactful, sustainable solutions for future developments. We are excited to bring our design and analytical strengths to new projects and invite potential clients to collaborate with us in creating inspiring, resilient, and sustainable environments.
