Challenge
Transforming an abandoned residential structure—left vacant for over twelve years—into a fully functional, freestanding restaurant required a strategic approach. The existing building faced significant structural deterioration, including uninhabitable spaces and foundational instability. Additionally, the design needed to balance cost-effectiveness with creating a fresh identity while enhancing spatial quality and accessibility.
Solution
A thorough evaluation of the building’s condition guided a precise, surgical rehabilitation strategy. Structural integrity was restored by underpinning the entire foundation, converting previously unusable areas into habitable space. The design introduced a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, integrating new roof decks, an extended porch, and a dynamic second-floor dining space with a vaulted ceiling. Thoughtful planning ensured accessibility improvements, including new handicap-accessible ramps for families with strollers and elderly patrons, enhancing overall convenience.
Value Delivered
The adaptive reuse approach not only revitalized a long-neglected property but also established a distinctive, high-quality dining environment. The spatial transformation created a unique guest experience, blending openness, surprise, and functionality. Through cost-effective yet impactful design solutions, the project successfully redefined the building’s identity and was recognized with a local design excellence award.
