Challenge
Situated in a landmark district in Greenwich Village, NYC, this project aimed to revitalize both the interior and exterior of an aging venue that was losing customers despite its long-standing presence. Under new ownership, the goal was to reposition the food and beverage business by enhancing its accessibility, restoring its architectural character, and creating a fresh, inviting atmosphere while adhering to a tight budget and accelerated timeline.
Solution
The design reintroduced the building’s original aesthetic with a modern interpretation, removing the enclosed sidewalk café to improve street-level accessibility and better integrate with the historic district. Inside, the space was transformed by eliminating the drop ceiling, significantly increasing the first-floor height to create an open, airy ambiance with an industrial yet refined aesthetic. Classic millwork details, particularly at the bar counter, added warmth and craftsmanship. The redesign introduced built-in bench seating around the perimeter, a centrally located avant-garde bar station, and carefully selected ceiling tiles that subtly engage customers while enhancing the overall entertainment experience.
Value Delivered
By blending historic restoration with contemporary hospitality design, the project successfully repositioned the business, making it more inviting and commercially competitive. The use of cost-effective, off-the-shelf materials and repurposed building elements ensured a high-impact transformation within budget and timeframe constraints. The result is a chic, intimate venue that honors its historic setting while appealing to modern clientele, offering an elevated yet approachable dining and social experience.
